Stirling Bagpipes’ owner and bagpipe maker Alan Waldron’s connections with bagpipes started in Gibraltar in 1991 when he first took lessons in piping. Later, Alan spent some time working in Galway, Ireland where he intensified his interest in folk music & bagpipes.
On the return from Ireland in 1996, Alan knew that he wanted to be involved intensively with the making and playing of bagpipes. He was employed retailing pipes for 3 years and was tutored in bagpipe playing by world renowned soloist Allan MacDonald.
By 2000 he started making his own pipes. He joined Garvie Bagpipes, one of the leading Scottish bagpipe makers based in Edinburgh. This is where he first mastered manufacturing smallpipes, borderpipes & session pipes and shortly afterwards became a highland bagpipe maker. He is involved in all stages of bagpipe making including reed making, bellow making, lathe work and tuning.
Alan has always dreamt about starting his own bagpipe making business. That dream came true eleven years ago when he found suitable premises and decided on relocating to Stirling.
