The Queen Officially Opened the Burrell Collection in Glasgows Pollok Country Park

October 21, 1983

Queen Elizabeth II officially opened The Burrell Collection, a world-class museum nestled in Glasgow’s Pollok Country Park. The collection—comprising over 9,000 works of art, including Chinese ceramics, medieval tapestries, Islamic art, and works by Degas and Rodin—had been donated to the city nearly 40 years earlier by Sir William Burrell, a wealthy shipping magnate and philanthropist.

The museum’s distinctive modern building was specifically designed to showcase this remarkable private collection, which remains one of the cultural jewels of Scotland.
