The Edinburgh Review First Published.

October 10, 1802

The first issue of The Edinburgh Review is published with the mission to “erect a higher standard of merit, and secure a bolder and purer taste in literature, and to apply philosophical principles and the maxims of truth and humanity to politics.”

Founded by a group of young Whig intellectuals including Francis Jeffrey, Sydney Smith, and Henry Brougham, the journal quickly became one of the most influential literary and political periodicals of the 19th century. It combined sharp criticism with liberal reform ideals, challenging established power structures in both literature and politics.
